“….thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed….”
~Leviticus 19:19 (KJV)
The above passage may have confused a lot of folks for thousands of years as they wondered “Why would God put such restrictions on us?”, as He didn’t have a habit of explaining His reasons. He simply said, in effect, “Trust Me”.
Today, however, we can understand through the science of genetics that when you crossbreed different species, you may gain some benefits, but it is always at the expense of other vital elements. One of these lost elements is called “Vitamin B-17“, and it is a very powerful regulator of certain cellular activities. Cancer cells have been observed to die off quickly when coming in contact with this substance. Drug companies found little profit in patenting something that grows best naturally, and almost nobody even remembers this drug today. B-17 once occurred naturally in thousands of grasses and grains, but the process of hybridization removed it from the resulting products. It still grows naturally in many non-GMO, or “heritage” seed products. This is illustrated graphically by the fact that many cultures have no cancer or tooth decay until exposed to a modern western diet.
There is a very powerful spiritual truth represented here I’d like to share with you, as a reminder of the consequences of trying to mix biblical truth with non-biblical sources: If you do so, you’ll lose your ability to fight off invaders to the body of Christ, both personally and corporately. Biblical truth doesn’t mix well with other so-called “truth”. It must remain pure and unadulterated, or it will be watered down and weakened. Without the purity of biblical truth, there is no power.
And where, you might ask, are our “fields”? They are our children, our families, and our congregations. Our places of so-called secular employment, and our institutions. Sow in these places with the pure, unadulterated, good seed of God’s Word, leaving out worldly wisdom and ideas. In due season, we shall reap. If you find the ground you’re trying to sow on is bad, find other ground. Don’t cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under foot, and turn, and rend you. Stand up to the unholy powers that try to strip away your rights and liberties. Ultimately, should this fail, “….when they persecute you in this city, flee to another”. But never, under any circumstances, compromise that good seed with mingled seed.
There is another problem that descends from the practice of sowing your field with mingled seed that needs to be exposed and expunged from the body of Christ, and this would be the practice of trying to make biblical truth line up to so-called modern science, new-age thought, or other extra-biblical sources and ideas. The Bible is the foundational truth, and God’s Word is the measure of all things, not the other way around. Instead of evaluating God’s Word in light of modern science and thought, we should always evaluate modern science and thought in light of God’s Word. This should be a no-brainer to the body of Christ, and yet we see the evidence in our society of the reverse, and always to our own detriment.
The church of Jesus Christ is not called to conformity with the world, but with Christ. If the world hated Him, the world will hate us. Get used to it, and be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might….not your own.
My question, therefore, is simply this:
Are you sowing your “fields” with mingled seed?
